Boost chlorine reliability with electromagnetic flowmeters

How Olin Corporation improved its electrolysis process with Proline Promag P 300 of Endress+Hauser

When Olin's Plaquemine, Louisiana (USA) chlorine facility needed a fix for unreliable flow measurements caused by extreme electrical interference, they turned to Endress+Hauser for accurate electromagnetic flowmeter readings. Proline Promag P 300 with floating measurement technology reduced susceptibility to stray currents and interference enabling immediate improvements in measurement stability, process control, safety and operational confidence.

Olin’s Plaquemine chlorine production facility benefits from accurate flow readings from the electromagnetic flowmeter Proline Promag P 300 despite high stray currents and interference

Stable, accurate flow measurement for every phase

  • Immediate improvements in measurement stability, process control, safety and operational confidence

  • Reduced cost and reduced risk of leaks or failures by eliminating the need for grounding rings

  • Process efficiency through accurate flow data across all operational phases, even in the face of extreme electrical interference

  • Reduced downtime due to the elimination of erratic readings and false alarms

  • Lower maintenance costs due to less shutdowns, high corrosion-resistance and no mechanical components in the measuring tube

Challenges solved using electromagnetic flowmeter principle

In Olin’s chlorine production process, flow measurement is critical: insufficient flow can prevent proper chemical mixing, reduce efficiency and trigger alarms or shutdowns. The Plaquemine facility faced persistent challenges with electromagnetic flowmeters in its high-voltage environment (up to 850 volts DC and 72,000 amps). They struggled with erratic flow readings caused by stray currents and potentially damaged grounding electrodes. Operators had to rely on workarounds and endure costly inefficiencies.

Electromagnetic flowmeter tech cuts stray current risks

To address these challenges, Olin collaborated with Endress+Hauser to trial the Proline Promag P 300 electromagnetic flowmeter equipped with floating measurement technology. This innovative design eliminates the need for traditional grounding rings, significantly reducing susceptibility to stray currents and interference. Promag P 300 withstands harsh conditions and delivers the accuracy, reliability and confidence Olin needed to optimize its processes and plan for the future.
